Small enough to fit on a windowsill or bookshelf, it punches well above its weight, delivering the kind of clear, detailed sound you wouldn't expect from a speaker this size.
At home it behaves like any other Sonos speaker. Connect it to your Wi-Fi via the Sonos app and it appears as a room in your system — stream from any service, group it with other speakers around the house, or ask Alexa to play something hands-free. Automatic Trueplay runs continuously in the background, adjusting the sound for wherever the speaker is sitting, whether that's a kitchen worktop, a bathroom shelf, or an outdoor table.
Away from home it switches seamlessly to Bluetooth, pairing with your phone like any other portable speaker. The transition between Wi-Fi and Bluetooth is handled automatically as you move in and out of range — there's nothing to manually switch. Battery life is an impressive 24 hours, comfortably covering a full day out, and it charges via the included wireless charging base or USB-C on the go.
The IP67 rating means it's fully dustproof and waterproof — submersible in up to a metre of water for 30 minutes. It won't be troubled by rain, pool splashes, or a day at the beach. The stereo sound — delivered through two tweeters and a midwoofer — is genuinely impressive for a speaker this portable, with real stereo separation and solid bass that the Roam 2 simply can't match.
If you're already a Sonos household, the Play is a natural companion to take beyond the rooms your fixed speakers cover. If you're new to Sonos, it's also a capable standalone speaker that can grow into a full multi-room system whenever you're ready.
